Comrades came from behind to edge a win against Greenisland in a pre-season game at Dixon Park where they had plenty of chances.

Inside three minutes a great ball over the top of the visitors’ defence by Callum Cowan set Lewis Mearns free into the box and he fired a shot just wide of the far post from a tight angle.

On nine minutes Mearns again came close. Nathan Best found him with a ball played into the area and he fired a firm shot on target. However, he was denied by a good save from the Greenisland keeper.

Three minutes later Mearns was again in the action as a great through ball from Stuart Hutchinson set him free down the middle, however the keeper again did well, coming out to block at the edge of the box.

The visitors began to get a foothold in the game. In the 29th minute they were gifted the lead when a slack ball played across the home defence was intercepted by a Greenisland player who was able to advance unchallenged to slot the ball home.

Comrades had a good opportunity for an equaliser on 35 minutes when Nathan Best played the ball in to Lewis Mearns at the near post, but his flicked effort from close range went wide of the target.

Six minutes into the second half the hosts got on level terms. A free kick was won just outside the area and Callum Cowan stepped up to hit a precise effort low inside the post.

In the 71st minute Comrades had a great opportunity to take the lead when Lewis Mearns cross into the box found the head of Zach Anderson, but he headed wide from a good position. Then, two minutes, later Lewis Mearns stooped to head the ball onto the bar from a Ryan McMenenmy cross.

The home side got what was to prove the winner on 77 minutes when the visitors’ keeper dallied on the ball inside the six-yard box and was robbed by Lewis Mearns who finished into the empty net.

In the 85th minute Nathan Best was unlucky not to add to his side’s lead when he struck a curling effort from the edge of the area which struck the crossbar.
